Use Two External Hard Drives At One Time-Signature Collision [Resolved]

image Recently I purchased two 500GB FreeAgent external portable hard drives and when I plug them both in, my computer only recognizes one of them. The other stays offline and disk management says:”The disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk that is online.”

[multiple passports — signature collision]

I wanted to solve this issue, so that I am able to have both drives plugged in and accessible. Fixed by right clicking that message over “Offline” and selecting Online.

Solution is very simple. follow the steps given below:

1- If you have administrative rights  go to START button, and right click on “COMPUTER” and Select “MANAGE” or find  MANAGE on your system.

2- In this window, select from left side ” Disk Management ”

3- You will see your drives on the right side. (HERE YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR NOT WORKING DRIVE, ITS APPEAR AS OFFLINE) you may have to look around for it , should I say look down to find it, the drivet may not be on the right it may be below the disk  list, look around and down

4- right click on “OFFLINE” tag and select “ONLINE”

5- Good to go…

Let me know if your problem is solved using these steps.

Great fix thanks, works fine on windows 7 and beats having to change a disks signature manually using diskpart.. I use a dual external drive hub to drop drives into to reformat or transfer data and sometimes come accross this issue, and previously just disconnected the clashing drive. I wish I had found this fix sooner.

Hey this was the great solution or I should say the great tip. These kinds of solutions are always welcomed.
