A new and exciting service is being developed for phones that run Android 1.6+. Google Goggles is a visual search application which enables new possibilities for users. Now use pictures instead of text to search the internet.

It can identify text and search around the web. You can search for books, by taking a photo of the cover, and Google goggles will search in the web for matches. You can also take the picture of a business card, and the application will identify the information; you could make a call, or add a person to your contacts.

You can also take the picture of a painting to find out the author and the name. Or even take the picture of a famous landmark. While on the street, the camera view can be used to ‘point’ at the stores, and the GPS information and compass will be used to show the local business name. You can tap the name in order to receive information about the store.

Visual search is still in development, and it works for some things, for example, books, wines, contact information, artwork, places, and logos. It is intended that it provides capabilities for identifying food, plants, cars or animals. This is certainly the first approximation to a useful tool. A system could be able to do smarter things, like suggest a move in a chess game, take the picture of a leaf in order to identify a plant, or take the photo of a movie poster and determine the time it starts at your nearest cinema.

The pictures you take can be stored in search history, or can be deleted after the search results are shown. If you have an Android phone, you can go to Android Market and search for Google Goggles to download it. Below is the official Google Labs video which describes the application.
